Chitekete, song by the late Leonard Dembo, is arguably one of the best songs ever made in Zimbabwe and was so popular that it became a standard wedding song.

Most of us have enjoyed holidays like Christmas playing local music which we never paid for. We have watched local dramas, film and street theatre and we have read local novels for free. Right now, most of us have music in our phones and computers and can’t explain where or how we got it.

We have had great entertainers in our country, from music to books to sports to acting.

Sadly, we don’t get full-talent-life due to poor remuneration of the entertainers. Our celebrities are not rewarded enough to keep creating and piracy is so rampant in the country that most of the entertainers cannot even afford a decent lifestyle.

According to Afropop Chitekete sold more than 100 000 copies. The song was the first and only Zimbabwean album to spawn a song good enough to be played at the 1996 Miss World beauty pageant held in Namibia.

Dembo and his band, Barura Express, stuck to their guitar band-sound, pumping out both danceable and singable hits. Sadly, tragedy struck as the band hit full stride. Dembo died before his music had the opportunity to truly reach international audiences.
